This is truly a fine book, if not a great one. A man who has been all but forgotten by history has been saved from oblivion by author E. Lawrence Abel---a fine writer---and given his due for the contribution he made to the Union cause. What is most interesting is that the author makes no attempt at hagiography; he presents his subject as he was, warts and all. That is to say that he presents him as a seriously flawed human being, not an idealist, a utopian or a visionary, because he was certainly none of those. History is replete with examples of seriously flawed human beings who made serious contributions to the cause of right, truth and justice. Here’s another one.---John C.
